It's time for a fresh look at furniture in schools from an adult's point of view.

Calling primary and nursery school teachers everywhere! When did you last sit on a good back care chair at work? The answer is "probably never". You just put up with perching on the tiny chairs provided for the children and don't give much thought to the damage poor sitting posture could do to your back.

In order to maintain eye contact with small children and work effectively with them in primary early years and health care settings, teachers and nursery staff will spend hours each day bending, twisting and reaching across extremely low tables.

Do you take "short-cuts" and end up kneeling on the floor? Before hauling yourself upright to move across the room, only to kneel down again, stoop or crouch awkwardly for another brief period. All these poor postures are likely to lead to increased levels of back, hip and knee strain and pain.

If you persist in making-do while working in child-sized environments, imagine how you might feel after just one year into your first teaching or child care job, let alone after 5, 10 or even 20 years. Let's hope your career does not come to a premature end owing to musculoskeletal problems caused by the bad back care chairs at work.

A survey has shown, two thirds of workers in primary schools and early years settings, such as children's nurseries or hospital paediatric ward play areas, have received treatment for back and joint problems resulting from repetitive poor working posture.

Paediatric physiotherapist, Lorna Taylor, has designed the Jolly Back Chair to specifically reduce damaging postures experienced by adults working at low levels with small children.

The unique features of the Jolly Back Chair - how do they help?

  • An adjustable lower back support promotes good posture and provided individual comfort by reducing muscle tension
  • A wedge-shaped seat cushion allows the thighs to slope slightly downwards, which enables Jolly Back Chair users to sit in a more natural upright posture while working at a low level
  • An extended handle, which is part of the chair backrest, makes it easy to move the Jolly Back Chair from place to place without needing to bend over or lift it
  • Large easy-roll wheels, two with castors, allow Jolly Back Chair users to glide to and fro around desks or workplaces, without over-reaching or twisting awkwardly
All of these features are clearly demonstrated in our short film below.

What benefits does the Jolly Back Chair offer?
